Is there a quick 'n simple way to open a Revit *.rfa file in "vanilla" AutoCAD?

Quickest way is to export the revit file to a dwg.
You sould be able to export it back to Acad 2000, 2004, 2007 & 2010 if you need to (from Revit 2010 anyway).

Export / Cad Formats / Dwg
 
There is an export file where you can set up your layers to look lie your traditional cad file. Takes a bit of time but is worth it.
