Must command then select?

I can't select items and then command a function, i must first enter a cmd. I don't know how to explain this in another way. Here is an example.

Steps:
0. Cmd prompts "Command"
1. I select a line
2. Cmd prompts "Command"
3. I hit "e" then "enter"
4.Cmd prompts "Select objects"

This did not happen before.
The result should be line erased...

What happened? How do I fix this?

It is also one of the answers that have the most variety in questions - there's a lot of issues that PICKFIRST=1 solves!

Could make a Sticky with 'Pickfirst solves everything...kinda' and put down a list of points it does fix, with a poll at the top stating 'Did this fix what you were after?' (Only yes in the poll; no need for a no when finding out how many people ask it)
