can't select multiple ite

Suddenly I can only select one item at a time. If I move onto another item, the first one de-selects. I haven't knowingly made any changes. Any ideas what has happened and how to put it right? I can select multiple items via 'click and drag', but only within one drag - another drag then de-selects the first drag again.

Filedia is the most common one. (file dialog box)
