Hey guys,

I'm just learning about using keyboard shortcuts to increase the efficiency of drafting by assigning commands to certain key combinations.

Is there any way to disable or alter the existing keyboard shortcuts in autocad? e.g X is explode and A is arc.

Thanks,

Seth.

You are referring to command aliases. They are listed in the acad.pgp file. This file can be edited using Notepad.

Another way to edit acad.pgp is while you are working inside AutoCAD. Here is some advice I posted to a similar question.

One must edit the acad.pgp file. If you do so with AutoCAD still running then you have to issue a REINIT command I believe before AutoCAD will recognize new shortcut commands.

1. Go to the Tools pull-down menu.
2. Click on Customize.
3. Click on Edit Program Parameters (acad.pgp).

This will open the acad.pgp file within Notepad. Make your additions/delections/changes then save the file. Restart AutoCAD or try using the REINIT command as mentioned previously.

I always find it best to leave the shortcut list Autocad supplies alone or you will be forever updating the file for future releases.  Also most people learn with the Autocad shortcuts and like them that way.  If anything I would only add more but never change.

Just use the modified .pgp in the next upgrade, shouldn't be a big deal. Check out the thread on custom pgp and you will see there are plenty that prefer to customize. Just remember to save the original with a new name so you will have it if necessary.

With 2010, the easiest way is to go into the managing tab and look for the small button that says PGP-Edit Aliases, that'll automatically open the file you need to edit, and it's self explanatory from there. Remember to do the command REINIT when you're done so that CAD recognizes the changes, or you'll be sitting there all day trying to edit the already edited file.

If you use the PGP-Edit Aliases option you do not have to issue the REINT command as it is automatic upon closing the file.

When you edit the pgp file go to the very bottom and add your aliases there, the last definition found will override any earlier ones.  When the next release comes out simply cut and paste your section to the new pgp, again at the very bottom.  It might even migrate those for you during the upgrade if you choose that option.
