new to autocad,inventor or sol

hi totally new as recently unemployed skilled sheet metal worker,with this skill dying fast due to automentation i have decided to go down the autocad route,bearing inmind i dont even have 2d experience,but my question is should i start with 2d or could i jump straight onto inventor,solidworks or solid edge,and which is best suited to sheetmetal,also to keep cost to a minimal as going to be funded by myself.

Welcome to CADTutor!!

Skip AutoCAD for sheetmetal. I would say Solidworks or Inventor, I'm not sure which is cheaper, never used Solid Edge.

If you are a student you can get free software from Autodesk.

Inventor, SolidEdge and SolidWorks are the modern next-generation MCAD products that have sheet metal tools built in.
They are professional programs and deserve (require?) a professional level of training.

There has been a program for displaced (unemployed) workers to get Inventor or SolidWorks for free student license http://www.autodesk.com/edcommunity (I don't know the SWx url off-hand.)

The displaced workers program ends on 11/16/2012.

If that program is not still in effect, do you have a child, relative, know anyone over the age of 11 that is in school somewhere?
