I registered with my email address, and was awaiting a verification email - which never arrived, despite numerous requests to resend it - therefore cannot log in until I can verify my email address. Past the deadline now I guess to get the software.

I think since you got the registration request in before the deadline - you should be OK there. (and you always have a couple of back-ups (children)).
I used to follow the forum on that site (before they went to Twitter) and would see problems like this often. I don't recall what the typical solutions were.
With nearly 6 million members and approaching that number quickly - it might simply be a back-log of getting out the acceptances.
